Bei einer Silvesterfeier lernen sich Troy, der Basketballstar und Gabriella, das Superhirn, bei einer unfreiwilligen gemeinsamen Karaoke kennen. Sie entdecken ihren Spaß am Singen und als sie sich an der gleichen Schule wieder treffen, funkt es zwischen den beiden. Allerdings passen ihre Lust, beim Schulmusical mitzumachen, nicht zu ihrem sonstigen Leben.
