Die vollschlanke Tracy Turnblad mit der turmhohen Frisur und einem noch größeren Herzen kennt nur eine Leidenschaft: den Tanz. Sie träumt von einem Auftritt in der “Corny Collins Show”, der hipsten TV-Dance-Party in Baltimore. Eigentlich ist Tracy für die Show wie geschaffen – doch sie hat ein gar nicht so kleines Problem: Sie passt einfach nicht hinein. Tracys mehr als mollige Figur stempelt sie in coolen Kreisen zur Außenseiterin, und ihre liebevolle, aber sehr gluckenhafte und ebenfalls übergewichtige Mutter Edna wird auch nicht müde, ihre Tochter immer wieder darauf hinzuweisen. Doch Tracy lässt sich nicht entmutigen, denn eines weiß sie ganz genau: Sie ist zum Tanzen geboren. Und ihr Vater Wilbur macht ihr Mut: “Versuch’s! Wer etwas erreichen will, muss klotzen, nicht kleckern!” (Verleiher-Text)

Hairspray is small and simple, but nice and cute fun for one evening. It is to Adam Shankman’s credit that he is also behind the choreography.

I don't like musicals, but if one makes me tap the tunes onto the back of my seat, it’s a winner in my book. Shankman's film affected me like no other in recent years. Although the plot is reminiscent of a class simpleton, it's so well cast and acted, musically and lyrically maximally entertaining, and most importantly, brilliantly choreographed, that it took me along for the big ride. Based on reason, it deserves 4 stars, but my reason dissipated after the first musical number, so I’m giving it 5 stars based on the feeling from my heart!

Ja, ich habe Michelle Pfeiffer wiederentdeckt und bin total begeistert von allem, was sie gespielt hat, obwohl die musikalischen Sachen irgendwie auf sie abfärben. Andererseits ist "Makin' Whoopee" eine tolle Sache. Doch dieses kleine Musical ist eigentlich nur eine Parodie auf Haarspray und die monströsen Kreationen, die eine ganze abartige Generation mit ihrer Hilfe geschaffen hat. Aber um Himmels willen, muss man denn fast zwei Stunden darauf verwenden? Wirklich nicht.

Well, new times. Or actually old times. Instead of pomade, hair gel is now used. But Travolta remains. He just turned into a fat woman. I haven't seen the original musical movie from 1988, so I can't compare yet, but if you like the 50s, this will grab you from the beginning. And if you don't like the 50s, the great songs can still captivate you. I didn't believe in this movie, but the songs simply won me over. It's an incredibly positive film and I gladly let myself be overwhelmed by these overly positive spectacles. Excellent casting.
