In dieser Komödie des amerikanischen Komikers Dave Chappelle geht es in erster Linie um Musik. Zu sehen sind – neben ihm – Namen wie Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Dead Prez und Jill Scott. Dave Chappelle, der beliebte Starkomiker von MTV, weiß, wie man feiert. Im September 2004 erfüllt er sich selbst einen Wunsch und organisierte mit “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party” in Brooklyn das Konzert, zu dem er selbst immer schon mal gehen wollte. Aber was heißt schon Konzert? Was da abging, war eine so noch nie gesehene und gehörte Verbindung aus Comedy-Show, Live Music-Acts und Straßenfest – umsonst und draußen – für eine ganze Neighborhood. Jill Scott, Kanye West, Common, The Roots oder Mos Def sind die Stars dieses sensationellen Konzerts, das noch dazu in einer umjubelten Reunion der Fugees gipfelt. Michel Gondry, bekannt durch “Vergiss mein nicht!” und seine Musikvideos für Björk, Kylie Minogue, Massive Attack oder die Chemical Brothers hat Dave Chappelle bei der Organisation und Durchführung einer mehr als ungewöhnlichen Kiez-Party begleitet. The initial half hour when Chappelle is running around his hood and rounding up people to come to his show is outstanding, as well as the part about the preparations with a visit to a gem of architecture inhabited by a post-hippie couple. But then the movie begins to focus fully on the party itself and, with respect to the style of music, I am pretty surprised that I survived watching it in good health. But then immediately after it ended, I had to put some Alice Cooper on the record player as detox; who can stand all that proclamation about suppression, (in)equality and (lack of) freedom from people with diamonds in their ears?
