Die schöne Zigeunerin Esmeralda lebt im mitteralterlichen Paris und wird vom einfachen Volk bewundert und verehrt. Sie zieht als Tänzerin viele Blicke auf sich und läßt so manches Herz höher schlagen. Durch eine falsche Aussage des Alchimisten Claude Frollo, der vor nichts zurückschreckt, soll sie bestraft werden. Da kommt ihr Quasimodo, der Glöckner von Notre Dame, zu Hilfe. Er ist häßlich und bucklig und wird von allen nur verspottet und verachtet. Aber er hat nicht vergessen, daß Esmeralda ihm einmal in einer schweren Stunde zur Seite gestanden hat. Nun gewährt er ihr in der Kathedrale Unterschlupf, um sie vor ihrer Hinrichtung zu schützen. (StudioCanal Deutschland)

A fairly faithful rendition of a famous story. Pretty good craftsmanship, with decent actors and setting, but emotionally somewhat bland and, considering the excellent premise, the narrative is uninteresting and slowly fades from memory as the closing credits roll. The only memorable thing is the charming Lollobrigida, who does her best as Esmeralda. For me, 60%.

Still, I preferred the black and white version with Charles Laughton, who definitely had the best mask of the hunchback in history, including the first one with Lon Chaney. This color version is not bad, it builds up excellently towards the end, but I still didn't feel like this was as well-executed from a societal critique standpoint as the older version.
