Nachdem Mechagodzilla in seinem letzten Kampf gegen Godzilla schwer beschädigt wurde, wird er nun in einem Untergrund-Dock aus Godzillaknochen wiederhergestellt. Yoshito Nakajo, Mitglied der Reparaturtruppe bekommt während seines Urlaubs unerwarteten Besuch von ein paar Feen der Infant Islands. Sie raten ihm eindringlich ab einen Roboter aus Godzillaknochen zu bauen, andernfalls würde Mothra die Seiten wechseln und gegen die Menschheit kämpfen. Die Reparatur wird trotzdem fortgesetzt und schon bald mehren sich seltsame Ereignisse. Es dauert nicht lange und schon wütet Godzilla wieder in den Städten Japans. Bald eilt auch schon Mothra zu Hilfe aber dann entscheidet der Premierminister den noch nicht ganz reparierten Mechagodzilla am Kampf teilnehmen zu lassen. Der Kampf unter den drei Monstern beginnt als plötzlich neue Riesenungeheuer hinzukommen. Und keiner weiß ob sie Freunde oder Feinde der Menschheit sind! (Verleiher-Text)

28) GODZILLA, MOTHRA, MECHAGODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. – NEW GENERATION SERIES 2002-2004. A straightforward episode with a hint of nostalgia. This nostalgia is provided by the character of the uncle, who in a flashback of a few seconds goes back 43 years, to the time when he met Mothra. It’s nice that the filmmakers don’t forget their former heroes. Otherwise, this penultimate episode doesn't bring anything substantial, the storyline is bogged down by side-plots, everything really revolves around a 55-minute(!) duel between Mothra, the government project Mechagodzilla and Godzilla, in Tokyo. As a little twist, Mothra finally dies in the Godzilla series and gives birth to twin larvae that join the fight by squirting sticky secretion and biting Godzilla's tail. It must be said that the filmmakers have come a long way in terms of execution and effects, some of the pyrotechnic sequences were really excellent. In an explosive conclusion, Mecha Godzilla spirals out of human control and decides to drown himself and Godzilla in the Japanese trench. The grand finale will come next year.

The film "Gojira vs. Mothra vs. Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S." is simply the new generation of kaiju and I have to get used to the fact that it also means that the films are relatively cheap at first glance and not as grandiose. A little return to the roots, maybe a virtue out of necessity. But I enjoy it in these films and I enjoy their simplicity because the creators still put a lot of effort into the battles.
