Die talentierte Autorin Elizabeth schreibt sich 1985 in der Eliteuniversität Harvard ein. Mit ihren früh vollendeten Aufsätzen erregt sie die Aufmerksamkeit des Musikmagazins „Rolling Stone", doch eine quälende Schreibblockade beendet ihren Höhenflug. Freunde, die ihr helfen wollen, werden von ihr brüskiert. Der quälende Streit mit ihrer neurotischen Mutter und exzessiver Drogenmissbrauch stürzen die junge Frau in eine tiefe Depression. Nach einer gescheiterten Gesprächstherapie verschreibt die Psychiaterin ihr eine Wunderpille namens „Prozac". Mühsam beginnt Elizabeth die Puzzlestücke ihrer Weltsicht in einem Buch zu ordnen. (ARD)

Christina Ricci already showed in her younger days that she would grow up to be a great actress one day (or through Wednesday in The Addams Family, the sexually adventurous girl in The Ice Storm :)), Depp's coolly beautiful companion in Sleepy Hollow, to the lead and rather difficult role in Prozac Nation). The film certainly doesn't rest on Christina alone – the script is certainly interesting and there are some strong directorial moments that are used to achieve a deeper and more evocative portrayal of the main character's psyche. Definitely a film worth watching.

Prozac Nation is a formally classic autobiography. Depression treated with this pill is told in many stories, and this one goes back to the 80s, although the production did not address anything contemporary. But who would mind that? The book was published in 1994, and primarily it's about emotions. And those are the domain of a very good cast: Christina Ricci, Anne Heche, Michelle Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jessica Lange. There's probably no need for more.
