Po als spiritueller Führer? Das kann nur eine Reihe von Problemen nach sich ziehen. Denn erstens weiß Po ungefähr so viel über spirituelle Führung wie über Low-Carb-Diäten, und zweitens muss er rasch einen neuen Drachenkrieger finden und ausbilden, bevor er seine wichtige neue Position einnehmen kann. Zu allem Überfluss ist vor Kurzem eine mächtige Super-Schurkin auf der Bildfläche erschienen: Das Chamäleon ist in der Lage, sich im Handumdrehen in jede beliebige Kreatur zu verwandeln, ganz gleich, ob groß oder klein. Po kann etwas Unterstützung also gut gebrauchen. Er findet sie – mehr oder weniger – in Form der im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ausgefuchsten Diebin Zhen: Die clevere Steppenfüchsin geht Po zwar ganz schön auf die Nerven, doch ihre Fähigkeiten erweisen sich als äußerst wertvoll. Um das Tal des Friedens vor den Klauen des Chamäleons zu beschützen, bleibt dem ungleichen Duo nichts anderes übrig, als sich zusammenzuraufen. Und dabei merkt Po rasch, dass man wahre Helden mitunter an ganz unerwarteten Orten findet … (Universal Pictures Germany)

After finding that his days of fighting are over because he will have to become a spiritual master, Po decides to embark on one last adventure with a young thief, but little does he know that he will be up against an adversary who may be beyond his strength. Kung Fu Panda 4 is an inoffensive animated action flick, but it doesn't take the franchise anywhere. On the one hand, we get fine fights and a goofy protagonist, but alongside that we also get a minimum of new ideas and a woeful lack of old familiar ones. It's enough for a slightly above average animated flick, but I’m not sure this series can offer something more.

After eight years, the obese, gluttonous and clumsy Dragon Warrior Po (soon-to-be spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace) returns to the scene to face perhaps his most diabolical opponent yet, the Chameleon. Kung Fu Panda 4 is quite average, offering essentially another generally straightforward adventure with no major surprises or demands on the viewer. I had the feeling that they didn't use the (literally) multilayered potential of Chameleon and were just after a spectacular show, but I praise the voice-acting of Viola Davis. I found the final confrontation a bit rushed, as if they suddenly remembered that they had a burning deadline to submit the final film and needed to cut it as quickly as possible. The film is not boring in the cinema, but a few days after the screening you won’t remember much about it.
