Ray Barrett stars as Harry Spalding, a man haunted by the mysterious death of his brother, in this Hammer Studios horror picture. Determined to investigate the circumstances behind his brother's death, Harry and his wife Valerie pick up and move into his late brother's house in Cornwall. There, Harry learns about the reclusive Dr. Franklyn, a former theology professor who specialized in studying arcane religions, and his daughter Anna. After some more prying into the life of Dr, Franklyn, Harry is attacked by a strange reptilian creature who miraculously leaves him alive and convinced that he has found his brother's killer. One of Hammer's best movies, THE REPTILE is by turns atmospheric and gruesome, and is a thoroughly creepy and entertaining film. (Verleiher-Text)

Das schlangenartige Monster auf dem Cover sieht toll aus, aber im Film sieht es schon viel schlimmer aus. Die Maske mit den riesigen Bommeln ruft nicht viel Angst hervor, genauso wenig wie die Atmosphäre, die diesmal aufgrund der langweiligen Handlung ihre Wirkung verfehlt, obwohl nicht viel passiert. Eines der Hauptprobleme sehe ich in den flachen Charakteren, mit keinem von ihnen kann man sich sympathisieren, was bei anderen Werken der Hammer-Schmiede kein Problem war. Gilling ist kein Fisher. Trotzdem habe ich "Plaz" ohne die geringste Anstrengung oder Schaden für die Gesundheit ganz gesehen.

The Reptile isn't a great piece of British horror, but it fits in quite nicely with the style that the Hammer studio had in the 1960s. Unfortunately, this is a film that met the needs of the studio in terms of quantity rather than quality. Nevertheless, it can be said that the mask of the main villain is quite decent and can still captivate even after more than fifty years.
