In this magnificently eerie and romantic film - loosely based on the Japanese folktale "The Cat's Return" - a mother and daughter-in-law (Nobuko Otowa and Kiwako Taichi) are raped and murdered by pillagers, but return from the dead as vampiric cat spirits intent on revenge. As the ghosts lure soldiers into the bamboo groves, a fearless samurai, Gintoki (Kichiemon Nakamura), is sent to stop their reign of terror. (Eureka Entertainment)

Die etwas jüngere Schwester Onibaby mit fast demselben Mantel. Erwartet also eine gewisse familiäre Tragödie mit starkem Fokus auf visuelle Ästhetik, die in schwarz-weißem Format sehr interessante Bilder zaubert. Das für japanische Filme dieser Zeit typische Spiel mit Klängen ist natürlich auch hier enthalten, aber mir scheint, dass ihr Einsatz in einigen Momenten ziemlich bizarr ist: zum Beispiel das Eröffnungsgetränk der Samurai aus dem Fluss, das mit monotonem Schlucken von jemandem am Mikrofon "bereichert" wird - da dachte ich, ich lache mich kaputt. Es sieht sich aber ziemlich gut an, sodass auch das letzte Drittel, das sich nach dem Aufdecken der Karten ziemlich zieht, nicht weh tut.

The message of the Japanese movie Black Cat will not surprise an experienced moviegoer because the first scene gives it away, but it does not matter because the important thing is the journey, not the end. In addition, the execution is something that left me spellbound. Black Cat is a great and unique horror movie in my opinion.
