Der Untergang

Ich habe noch nie in einem Multiplex-Kino ein Publikum erlebt, das während des Abspanns so still war. Der Untergang ist ein bescheidenes Meisterwerk. Intensiv ist vor allem der Inhalt, den der Film rekonstruiert. Weil die Ereignisse so schwerwiegend waren. Das Bild hat einen bescheidenen Interieur-Theatercharakter, der auf einer möglichst realistischen Darstellung der Szenen und den Schauspielleistungen basiert. Die Schauspielleistungen sind einzigartig. Nicht nur Bruno Ganz, sondern auch die anderen Protagonisten haben ihr Bestes gegeben. Eine tolle Besetzung des Ehepaares Goebbels, das mit seiner Kaltblütigkeit und der ungesunden Beziehung zum Führer den schrecklichen Ausdruck von Hitlers dämonischer Persönlichkeit fast übertrifft. Der kalte Blick von Goebbels wird mich noch eine Weile verfolgen. Der Film regt unter anderem den Gedanken an, wie wohl die Welt aussehen würde, wenn Hitlers Plan gelungen wäre. Die Szene, in der er an einem Modell des Zentrums der Hauptstadt des Dritten Reiches eine visionäre Rede hält, gehört zu den besten Passagen im Film. (21.04.2005)

For a person who is not interested in history and confuses Husák with Hitler, it is certainly a meritorious and interesting piece of work, but for someone with an interest in history, it is a modest account that does not bring any fundamental new information and not even the controversial view of one human being that is so much proclaimed in the press. In any case, the performances were excellent, including Bruno Ganz, whose role was tempting to overact, which fortunately did not happen. Overall, I would see it as a three and a half stars, rounded down this time due to the high expectations. (27.11.2005)

Das einzig Negative an Der Untergang ist sein formaler Aspekt. Es ist kein entscheidendes und fatales Negativum, wie manche "Ich muss immer etwas anderes schreiben als andere"-Rezensenten in ihren Analysen zu beweisen versuchen (nicht wahr, Herr Šafránek...). Der Regisseur und die Autoren haben sich für eine "dokumentarische Distanz" zur Handlung und einen sehr expressiven Umgang mit der Atmosphäre als Haupterzählperspektive entschieden. So wirken die Dialoge nüchtern und ungestylt, während die erdrückende Atmosphäre des Bunkers durch die Soundeffekte (Stille vs. Rumpeln), die Kameraführung (die sehr an den Figuren klebt und einen klaustrophobischen und hoffnungslosen Eindruck vermittelt) und den Schnitt (der die Illusion von Innenräumen mit dem Naturalismus von Außenräumen verbindet) reichlich und eindrucksvoll illustriert wird. Während die ausdrucksstarke Komponente des Films gut funktioniert, neigt der Dokumentarfilm dazu, in exzessive, halbsinnige, mehrdeutige und langweilig verzweigte Dialoge abzugleiten, die dem Film durch ihre Wiederholungen den Schwung nehmen. Nicht tödlich, klar. Die Einführung eines "zweiten" Erzählers in Form von Traudl Jung, die eine zivile Sicht auf die Ikonen des Dritten Reiches vermittelt - jene zivile Sicht, die in ihrer Naivität und Blindheit vielleicht das tragischste Merkmal des Films ist. Und Jungs dokumentarisch anmutender Nachsatz beendet es in seiner ganzen Nacktheit: "... ich hätte mich mehr dafür interessieren sollen..." Ein erschreckender Abschluss einer der Linien. Aber Der Untergang hat mehr Linien, und man muss zugeben, dass es Regisseur Oliver Hirschbiegel gelungen ist, sie alle souverän und überzeugend darzustellen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Film, der vor Atmosphäre strotzt, der mit Fragen quält (die der Zuschauer selbst beantworten muss) und der deprimierend ist, weil er nichts mit pathetischen Lockmitteln heroischen Pathos’ verbirgt. Das deutsche Kino hat das Staatsexamen der Nachkriegsmündigkeit erfolgreich bestanden... (21.01.2006)

A movie that seems more like a documentary that isn’t so much about Hitler’s last days, as about the people around him and his last atrocity committed on his own nation. Certainly worth watching, but if it hadn’t been made by Germans, it would never have caused such a stir (is it really making Hitler seem more human if he thanks his cook for his food?). Even so, it’s good that it was the Germans who filmed it; they need to chase the skeletons out of their closet. (06.05.2005)

The roaring protagonist Ganz may look like Hitler, but that's not enough for a good movie. After the first half hour, all the dramatic unrest or sadness of the supporting characters starts to play out lightly, and the final catharsis doesn't have time to fix anything. In the end, the war film crystallizes into a dramatic journey through the history of Germany, accompanied by confused editing and a sense of a (non)eventful film that was only talked about from a thematic standpoint. This is the precisely and generously filmed agony of a deteriorating political system and the once proud and invincible army of Nazi Germany. It is probably the most impressive German film about their perspective on participation in World War II. Except for details such as personal dialogues between characters, it is based on historical facts. Hour after hour, we can observe the relentless tightening noose of encirclement around Berlin, the declining mood of the bunker occupants beneath the Reichstag building, until it reaches freezing point, exposing human characters and the self-proclaimed elite, who wanted to rule the world, and who must now hold themselves accountable. It is an excellent study of human characters in a critical situation, evading responsibility in a live broadcast. Bruno Ganz deserves the highest recognition for his portrayal of the German dictator. Selbst Jahre später ist Der Untergang ein wahrhaft gewaltiges Erlebnis. Der berühmte Produzent Bernd Eichinger stützte sich dabei geschickt auf das gleichnamige Buch von Joachim Fest und die Erinnerungen von Hitlers jüngster Sekretärin Traudl Junge, die unter dem Titel "Bis zur letzten Stunde" veröffentlicht wurden. Schließlich bildet das Geständnis von Junge den Rahmen für die gesamte Geschichte der letzten Tage des Dritten Reiches. Und obwohl sie die Premiere des Films nicht mehr erlebte, wurden ihre Erinnerungen an ihre Jahre an der Seite des Führers in einem eigenen Dokumentarfilm, Im toten Winkel - Hitlers Sekretärin, festgehalten. Dank dieses Materials ist der Film eine viel tiefgründigere und plastischere Darstellung des Endes eines tausendjährigen Reiches, das nur 12 Jahre gedauert hat und dennoch immer wieder fasziniert und in allen Einzelheiten zu studieren ist. Wir verfolgen so viele wichtige Fragen und Paradoxe, Szene für Szene, und treffen die berühmt-berüchtigten Figuren der Geschichte wieder. Die Besetzung ist sehr interessant, zum Beispiel Eva Braun - sie war zum Zeitpunkt ihres Todes 33 Jahre alt, wird aber von der fast 40-jährigen Juliane Köhler (bekannt aus Aimée & Jaguar) gespielt. Und trotz dieses Handicaps wurde sie eine sehr authentische Frau Hitler. Magda Goebbels ist ein etwas anderer Fall - sie war zum Zeitpunkt ihres Todes 44 Jahre alt, ihre Figur ist die 6 Jahre ältere Corinna Harfouch (berühmt als Vera Brühne), für sie sprachen mehr ihre Taten als die Schauspielerei. Bruno Ganz (einer der besten Hitler) und Alexandra Maria Lara (Traudl Junge) sind praktisch ideale Darsteller. (19.01.2020)

The first war film dealing with the conflict from the other side, and also directed by “natives”. There is a certain interest in the material, but it doesn't have any significant impact on the viewer. The script is simple and the actors (although very decent) practically have nothing to rely on. Bruno Ganz stands out, but mainly because seeing Hitler himself on the screen is already a peculiar and unique experience. But Oliver Hirschbiegel didn't excel in terms of visual presentation. The cold visual style doesn't stand out as it should, and the war scenes are quite implausible and poorly edited. (25.09.2005)

The star of the film "The Fall of the Third Reich" is Adolf Hitler. No, maybe I should correct myself a little. The star is Bruno Ganz, who portrayed the German dictator in an absolutely incredible way, a person who was not afraid to kill millions of people just because they had a different origin than what he desired. True, his ideology was a bit more complicated, but we don't have to go into that. "The Fall of the Third Reich" is about how Hitler's life is coming to an end as the war in Europe is also coming to an end. The Soviets have reached Berlin and the city is being destroyed. The constant background of the whole film is explosions and gunfire. Hitler is still trying to do something to change the situation, he wants to reverse the course of events in his bunker, but gradually realizes that it is no longer possible. The last moments of this mad man are well-known, but when I watched what he actually did, when I could see him portrayed by the excellent Ganz, I realized that Hitler must have had enough sanity to realize that suicide is the only solution to leave this world peacefully and spare himself the inevitable trials that would follow. Eva Braun, his mistress and wife in the final stages of his life, is depicted as a completely fanatic woman who is willing to do anything for her Leader. But she was not alone. The film definitely does not aim to only condemn the Germans, I think that rather than an attack on the nation, it is a demonstration of what a person can achieve when they have sufficient abilities and acquire the necessary power. People are willing to go along with him under any conditions and take any steps, just to avoid being on the other side of the barricade. It is insane, but one single person can control the masses. Even if the masses know that he is insane, they will stand behind him as long as they feel that the other side is worse and that there is a bright future waiting on this - for now, right - side.
