Ace Ventura - Ein Tierischer Detektiv

One of the best "dumb" comedies. And even though it's dumb and stupid, it's also very funny. You just have to be ashamed that you think it's funny, and I'm not ashamed. (08.10.2002)

The whole thing relies only and just on the main protagonist. In view of the fact that Jim Carrey is on his best comic form here, this is no problem. He gives us no glimpse into his character acting drawer, but on the other hand he puts his rubbery face through its paces for the entire duration of the movie. Despite being ridiculously stupid, the result is a darn good comedy with lots of great gags and scenes. Even the screenplay is good in terms of the genre. Too bad that Carrey’s escapades found no support in the directing, which lacked invention. (24.01.2007)

One of those cases where a single actor can pull off an entire film all by himself. Ace Ventura is an insane, unbridled and not particularly funny comedy, but Jim Carrey's rubbery face and maybe also Bohdan Tůma's great czech dubbing will make you enjoy it like no other. I probably won’t watch it again, but I have too many memories from the first time... 70% (26.02.2013)

Ace Ventura ist ein Film vor allem für eingefleischte Fans von Jim Carrey und seinen theatralisch übertriebenen Grimassen, für die man - wenn man kein Fan ist - in der richtigen Stimmung sein muss. Mein Verhältnis zu seinem Humor ist zwiespältig - einige seiner Gags amüsieren mich, andere irritieren mich. In diesem Fall haben sich glücklicherweise die lustigeren unter ihnen durchgesetzt. Als ich den Film zum ersten Mal sah, war ich von der Identität des Hauptbösewichts wirklich überrascht, und als ich den Film jetzt nach x Jahren wieder ansah, war ich über den abschließenden hasserfüllten Unterton ziemlich verwundert. Genuinely funny here and there, and Carrey sometimes working real hard, but then the faces slowly start to get repetitive. Still, I got a better final impression of the film than I expected. (12.04.2010)
