Simon of the Desert is Luis Buñuel's wicked and wild take on the life of devoted ascetic Saint Simeon Stylites, who waited atop a pillar surrounded by a barren landscape for six years, six months, and six days, in order to prove his devotion to God. Yet the devil, in the figure of the beautiful Silvia Pinal, huddles below, trying to tempt him down. In Simon of the Desert treffen viele religiöse Szenen und Symbole mit einer gewissen Ironie und dem dazugehörigen Humor aufeinander. Manchmal hatte ich das Gefühl, einen Film von Pasolini zu sehen. Die einzelnen Szenen mit Satan und Versuchung haben mir sehr gut gefallen - sie waren fantasievoll und humorvoll obszön. Die größte Skurrilität kommt jedoch (oder besser gesagt, kommt) mit dem letzten Zeitsprung. P. S. Ich frage mich, was Buñuel an den Tritten nach Tieren sah (siehe dies und z. B. The Golden Age)?
