Vikings - Season 3 (2015) (Staffel)

Englisch Season 3 started off (and continued) very awkwardly, so I was pretty disappointed. There was a significant change for the better in Episode 6, which lasted until the end of the season. For me, the most striking episode was the eighth, which featured the attack on Paris and the best action of the series so far. I really enjoyed the character of Egbert, King of Wessex. Some episodes would have been rather bland without his scheming and manipulations.

Book of Blood (2009) booo!

Englisch I like Clive Barker’s books, but the film doesn't even feel like it was based on his work. Absolutely pathetic screenplay, not even worth filming. It’s a shame because with someone capable in charge, Barker’s books can be turned into something as good as Hellraiser.

I Am Legend (2007)

Englisch I don’t get it. Why? In the excellent first part of the film, the filmmakers take us into a masterfully crafted post-catastrophic world, which together with the script works really well. I couldn't tear myself away from the screen. The second part seemed like it was made by a completely different team of people and only the actors were left from the original set-up. The whole film felt completely disjointed. The second religious-sentimental part ruined my experience of the first part.

Showgirls (1995)

Englisch My favorite director Paul Verhoeven and the cast – 2 stars. The rest of the stars went to hell, just like the writing.

Oscar - Vom Regen in die Traufe (1991)

Englisch Although I hate remakes with a passion, Oscar is an exception. It's because I dislike French cinema and Funès even more than that. The film is literally packed with great actors and matching performances. I was most surprised by Sly, who clearly shows that there is more to him than just a muscleman/boxer. I've seen the film several times now and it totally blows me away every time, not only with its excellent plot, but especially the performances. For me personally, this is a great comedy. What gets me the most is that Tim Curry is constantly smiling like Pennywise...

The Others (2001)

Englisch One of my favorite horror films. Amenábar directed his own great screenplay excellently. The whole film is literally soaked in an atmosphere that most horror films can only dream of. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and doesn’t end in a disappointing way as is often the case. In fact, the whole thing escalates deliciously at the end and some of the powerful atmosphere lingers on for a while after the credits roll. I'm not a big Nicole Kidman fan so the biggest surprise for me was how good she was in this film. I enjoyed it. Well done!

Choking Hazard (2004)

Englisch This film is so dumb, it's almost beautiful. It's a comedy and I really laughed, even to tears, so the movie definitely worked for me. The zombie-hunters were hilarious.

Luftschlacht um England (1969)

Englisch A brilliantly made war film, four years younger than Battle of the Bulge, but infinitely better in terms of historical accuracy of wartime technology. True, the Messerschmitt Bf 109s could have done with a couple of tweaks in the area between the propeller and the cockpit, but still, close enough. With such a great cast, it would have taken some really bad writing or directing for it to fail. Fortunately, it wasn’t the case, and it turned out to be a terrific spectacle. It's amazing what was possible without the use of CGI.

Das Ding aus einer anderen Welt (1982)

Englisch This is my idea of a quality horror film. Carpenter created an extremely intense atmosphere. The script works like Swiss clockwork from the first moment until the end credits. I first saw The Thing as a school kid on a second-hand VHS tape. The quality of the sound and image corresponded to a copy of an eleventh copy of the tape, but it lost none of its power. I have seen it many times since, and it’s a powerful experience for me every single time. One of my favorite scenes is definitely the testing of blood with a hot wire. My review in three words: cult, classic, awesome.

Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)

Englisch An extremely compelling combination of a slow pace and a very disturbing character of a little Japanese boy who can fit inside any closet or corner of your home at night. Ugh, he scared me alright, the little bugger! An interesting concept for a horror film. You won't see streams of fake blood, but if you catch sight of something in the shadows with your peripheral vision, you might feel the urge to check that there’s really nothing there..
