Doc Martin - Berts Neuanfang (2007) (Folge)

Englisch The second episode of the third season was funny in the first place, so there was no risk of boredom. The doctor, Pauline, and her substitute amused me, and once again my suspicion was confirmed that dishwashers are dangerous to life. Once again, I could chuckle at romantic moments with the doctor; that person knows how to end a conversation.

E.T. - Der Außerirdische (1982)

Englisch How else should I rate a film which showed me what a pizza looks like and that you can even eat it? But seriously, this film was the best of sci-fi for me until Terminator and The Thing landed on the video store counters. Watching it today convinced me that E.T. still has something to offer. I've already tasted pizza, so that’s one mystery less, but I had a great time just the same. The level of special effects thankfully doesn't reach today's "amazing" digital qualities, so I was able to enjoy a film that blew my mind in primary school, and I still like it very much.

Alibi.com (2017)

Englisch Much to my surprise, it was oddly entertaining. The plot worked quite well, and in the moments when I, a person used to standard American romcoms, expected melodrama, the sneaky French served me some more comedy. I was considering a 3*+ rating all along, but the great tributes to other films as well as the awesome reference to “Assassin's Creed” made me give a fourth star.

Victoria & Abdul (2017)

Englisch I was entertained by the unexpected humor in the first half of the film, which decreased in the second half due to a more melancholy mood. But that’s okay, I don’t need to laugh all the way through. Judi Dench was great and made the whole film.

Schneemann (2017)

Englisch What a disaster. I have no idea why the creators decided to introduce Harry Hole to the audience through an adaptation of the sixth part of the book series. I don't know what someone who has never read the series can take away from the film, as it contains a lot of references to the previous storyline which isn’t part of the film. The film itself didn't make much sense to me, regardless of having read the books. The filmmakers made such a mess of the original story that I’m not sure why the murders were so complicated, and most of all, why J.K. Simmons agreed to take part in it.

Půldruhé hodiny zpoždění (2009) (Theateraufzeichnung)

Englisch This two-hander had me royally entertained. The play was superbly written, excellently staged and perfectly acted. The choice of actors was great, although I didn't find Daniela Kolářová nearly as relaxed as Milan Lasica, whose performance was impeccable. Both of them gave me fits of laughter in this clash of male and female perspectives on life. I enjoyed every minute of it, and it certainly wasn't the last time I've seen Pierre and Laurence.

Po strništi bos (2017)

Englisch I was expecting to laugh a bit more, but the mood of the film was rather melancholy. I was okay with that as soon as I realized that this wasn't going to be one of Svěrák’s typical comedies, and I quite enjoyed the film. I really liked the atmosphere of rural idyll spiced up with war events. What I loved were the performances of Oldřich Kaiser and Tereza Voříšková and the film’s subtle humor. It was an incredibly relaxing and feel-good film.

Mother! (2017)

Englisch I was pretty bored in the first half of the film. All in all, it irritated me rather than kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't help feeling like I was watching an invasion of barbarians into the household of normal, adaptable citizens. I kept waiting for the big twist at the end, but to my surprise, the film ended in a completely predictable way.

Zwischen zwei Leben - The Mountain Between Us (2017)

Englisch While the film had its bright moments, they were outweighed by boredom, plot nonsense (the flawless emergency landing of a practically dead pilot) and a totally mind-numbing ending. Not that I want to underestimate Idris Elba's parameters, but The Mountain Between Us? Come on. I got over the title eventually, but the two survivors deeply disappointed me by leaving the pilot for later, but completely ignoring him afterwards, and then constantly lamenting over the lack of food. I was appalled by the highly unsanitary scene in the cabin, and I was incredibly happy that the screen cannot transmit odor along with picture and sound. I also didn't understand why those two kept acting like it was freezing cold, when it turned out that the ice on the lake was pretty damn thin. I’d rather not comment on the ending. Anyway, the scenery was breathtaking.

Geostorm (2017)

Englisch I'm giving the film two totally subjective stars because it contained too many of my pet peeves. It was too multicultural, there was too much melodrama, American patriotism, too many moral lessons, and it reminded me too much of Independence Day. Plus, the whole time I felt like I was watching a film that was made in the 90s, only with updated special effects. At least the German woman didn't look like Angela...
