Biografie

He was born in Tunisia in 1960, and moved to Nice when he was six. He studied theatre at the Antibes Conservatory, and worked as an actor and stage director. After several roles in cinema with directors such as Techiné and Bouzid, he made his debut as director in 2000 with Poetical Refuge. With his next film, Games of Love and Chance (2003), he jumped to the international scene and won the César awards for Best Director and Best Film. The Secret of the Grain (2007) won the Jury’s Special Grand Award at Venice, and another two Césars for Best Director and Best Film. Blue is the Warmest Colour was a great success: it won the Palme d’Or and Fipresci Award at Cannes (among many other awards), it was nominated for the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, and it had a commercial release around the world. Mektoub My Love: canto uno premiered at Venice where it won two awards.
