Six years in the life of "Our Lady" Božena Němcová, when the writer fights the blows of fate in her personal life and the political situation by writing her memoir "The Grandmother". Because of its traditional poetics, this image of Němcová's struggle got overshadowed by the Czech New Wave; this gave an impulse to the film's creators - Otakar Vávra and František Pavlíček - to aim for new creative heights.
