A.I. – Künstliche Intelligenz ist ein bemerkenswerter, extravaganter, futuristischer Film, der einerseits eine Geschichte für Massen sein möchte, andererseits bemüht er sich um eine philosophische Analyse der schwierigsten Themen, welche den Platz der künstlichen Intelligenz in unserer Welt betreffen. Aus formaler Sicht ist er perfekt. Die Musik von John Williams ist wieder brillant, die Leistung von Haley Joel Osment, dessen innerliche Entwicklung das Gerüst der Geschichte ist, hervorragend und das Design der futuristischen Welt (insbesondere die "weinenden Löwen“ am Ende) atemberaubend. Was aber den Aspekt der Regie-Komplexität betrifft, dort ist der Film seltsam und chaotisch. Wenn sich des Stoffes Spielberg angenommen hat, sollte er sich darauf konzentrieren, was ihm nahe ist, und ein traumhaftes, emotionales und warmherziges Werk gestalten. Das Unkombinierbare zu kombinieren zählt sich nicht aus. (09.04.2018)

Once again I didn't give in to the critics and it paid off. A.I. is an excellent film and I left the cinema with a warm feeling in my heart. I think it is stupid to look for Kubrick here, this is sensitive Spielberg with all the bells and whistles. (27.06.2002)

Nein, ich habe keine Wunder erwartet, und das war auch gut so, denn es gab keine. Die Emotion der Geschichte vom "träumenden Roboter" wird vor allem durch den makellosen Osment aufrechterhalten, es ist nur schade, dass Spielberg irgendwie vergessen hat, wie man das Ende macht. Wie Minority Report wird auch A.I. - Künstliche Intelligenz zu einem unangenehmen Happy End gedehnt. Wäre der Abspann ein paar Minuten früher gekommen, wäre es ein hervorragender Film gewesen, aber das Ende ist ein ziemlicher Unsinn. Schade. Visuell und akustisch überzeugende Science Fiction mit etwas mehr nachdenklichem Subtext, aber Spielberg kann es besser. Fügen Sie den drei Sternen einen Halbmond hinzu. (25.01.2004)

Kubrick behind the concept, Spielberg the creator, and in the end, a beautiful film full of naive searching, simple and human thoughts, breathtaking performances by Osment and Law, and a conclusion that can mentally overwhelm. I admire this film for being able to combine traditional Spielbergian family values with a fascinating vision of the future, a plethora of technical gadgets, and many intellectual stimuli. A little different than I expected, but that's probably what made A.I. that much better. Spielberg's science fiction movies are among my favorites, and this one's no exception. Especially the ending (featuring the World Trade Center) was very impressive. Spielberg simply knows how to do these things. Haley Joel Osment was great and really impressive in his special role. The special effects are top notch, Williams' music is one of the best, and Teddy is cool :-). (25.07.2007)

A captivating and visionary sci-fi film that is unlike anything ever made before. It's not worth arguing about whether Kubrick would have done it better or worse. Spielberg made the film the way he wanted and did not embarrass his colleague. A technically flawless film with beautifully ethereal music and excellently chosen actors. A great experience and once again, one of the masterpieces of world cinema that will most likely never be fully appreciated. (26.10.2003)

This is supposed to be Spielberg’s dud? In that case, my opinion of his filmography has increased manifold... A film imperfect due its overly sentimental approach, but beautiful nonetheless in its narrative playfulness and the view of events through an eternally fascinated child's "mind" that best reveals Steven's own fascination with the subject matter. A post-humanity horror film and a film that strays heavily from Spielberg's previous style. It feels very closed, isolated, surreal, and most importantly, fatal. Despite its piecemeal screenwriting and production missteps, it is an exceptional film in how convincingly it closes the human chapter. Not just in the story, but also in the work with visuals, with Kaminski working with a tightly defined, hazy space and the role of sounds and music here uncharacteristically subdued for Spielberg and Williams, giving the film the impression of a memory even as you watch. I don't know if Stanley Kubrick could have gotten more out of this material, but I definitely don't think he would have made it as excessively sentimental as Spielberg. These are the exact elements that I don't like about his films. That sentimentality that tries to force tears in your eyes. However, I also didn't really like the story here, which is maybe too inspired by Pinocchio, but it tries to be different by bringing it into the realm of science fiction. (02.12.2015)

Crafted brilliantly, Spielberg's technical precision can't be denied, it's not even up for debate :)). Again, magical music by John Williams, really excellent cinematography by Janusz Kaminski, and Spielberg's script based on a story by Kubrick is also very good... But now comes the "but" :)) But despite the sympathetic performance of H.J. Osment and the great Jude Law, I was just missing something, something extra, the SOMETHING that maybe Close Encounters of the Third Kind had... And I still felt that Spielberg pushed the envelope a bit at the end, but that may just be my silly subjective feeling. Nevertheless, an extraordinary and repeatable experience! (01.01.2010)
