Yuji Shinoda ist Godzilla-Spezialist und hat seinen Job gekündigt, um sich Vorhersagen über zukünftige Angriffe des Monsters zu widmen. Die Wissenschaftsjournalistin Yuki Ichonose hält dies für eine gute Sache und unterstützt ihn dabei. An Arbeit mangelt es den beiden nicht, denn schon bald taucht Godzilla aus den Fluten des Meeres auf und zerstört die ganze Stadt Nemuro. Verzweifelt versuchen die Wissenschaftler einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Auftauchen Godzillas und einem sonderbaren Kometen herzustellen, der kurz zuvor in einem See entdeckt wurde. Während Godzilla sich auf den Weg zum Kernkraftwerk macht entpuppt sich der Meteor als gigantisches Ufo. Es attackiert Godzilla mit einem Hyperblast, der in aufs offene Meer trägt. Durch die enorme Wucht wird auch das Ufo stark beschädigt und es scheint als hätten sich die beiden Gegner selbst zerstört. Aber dann tauchen sie plötzlich wieder auf und die Finale Schlacht beginnt... (Verleiher-Text)

24) GODZILLA 2000 – ALTERNATE REALITY SERIES 1999-2001. Close Encounters of the Third Kind a-la Godzilla. A little awkward. Godzilla is largely absent, three quarters of the way through there is a not-so-engaging contact with a spaceship of an alien civilization that settles on one of Tokyo's skyscrapers and hacks government data, and only in the last 20 minutes or so the film delivers what has made the franchise so iconic. And that is action, which is scarce here, and although the alien monster with powerful front tentacles is indeed an "ugly motherfucker", its disposal is too quick and trivial. I enjoyed the ending, it was interesting. Only the philosophising of the protagonist, that Godizlla has protected us because he’s in each of us, sounds stupid with a shot of a destroyed city.

"Gojira 2000" is a classic B-movie that doesn't deviate significantly from its story and gives its audience exactly what they expected from a kaiju film. Considering that it was a film released at the dawn of the new millennium, I probably expected a little more, but I'm not completely disappointed because the final monster called Orga is simply a treat for the soul of every fan of Japanese kaiju.
