Musikmanager Colonel Parker (Tom Hanks) trifft in den 50er-Jahren auf den jungen Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) - und ist überzeugt, einen kommenden Star vor sich zu haben. Elvis ist mit afro-amerikanischer Musik groß geworden. Er sorgt mit seinem Mix aus Country und Blues sowie seinen zuckenden Hüftbewegungen beim Publikum für Furore und versetzt insbesondere seine weiblichen Fans in Ekstase. Mit Parker als Manager landet Elvis einen lukrativen Plattenvertrag. Doch seine provokanten Tanzbewegungen bringen Elvis bald Ärger mit den Behörden ein. Nach einer Auszeit als Soldat in Deutschland, wo er seine zukünftige Ehefrau Priscilla kennenlernt, kehrt Elvis in die USA zurück - und entfremdet sich immer mehr von seinem Manager, von dem er zugleich finanziell abhängig ist.
