US-Pokerspieler Jack verliebt sich Ende der 1950er Jahre in eine schöne Kubanerin, die mit den Aufständischen um Fidel Castro sympathisiert. Jack gerät in die Wirren der Revolution.
Weihnachten 1958: Auf einem Schiff nach Havanna trifft der amerikanische Profi-Pokerspieler Jack Weil auf die schöne Roberta und verliebt sich Hals über Kopf. Spontan hilft der Playboy ihr, Funkgeräte in das vom beginnenden Bürgerkrieg erschütterte Kuba zu schmuggeln. Roberta und ihr reicher Mann Arturo unterstützen heimlich die kommunistischen Aufständischen um Fidel Castro. Seinen Prinzipien treu, hält Jack sich zunächst aus dem politischen Konflikt heraus und möchte lediglich im Casino seines Freundes Joe Geld verdienen. Doch als Arturo von der Polizei ermordet und Roberta gefangengenommen und gefoltert wird, setzt er alles daran, seine große Liebe zu befreien. Dabei gerät er zwischen die Fronten der langsam eskalierenden Revolution.

A surprisingly balanced and bearable mix of romance and drama in an excellent visual package. Primarily benefiting from the setting, this relatively simple piece by the otherwise average and stereotypical Sydney Pollack stands out. Havana is a beautiful place, and the story set before the revolution in the 1950s has a literal magical charm, and appropriately supporting music and the charismatic Robert Redford are just the right additions. There isn't much to talk about in terms of acting, but Lena Olin is captivating, she handles the stronger scenes (of which there are not many) excellently. The characters can be somewhat confusing during the relatively long runtime, but the ending is satisfying, and the romance itself is decidedly mature, so why not.
