Winter, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Riesengebirge. Die beiden Jungen Matthias und Jan sind auf dem Heimweg, als ihnen ein seltsamer Mann begegnet. Dick eingemummelt huscht er wie ein Wirbelwind an ihnen vorbei ins Tal. Die Beiden sind sich sicher: Das muss Rübezahl gewesen sein – der Herrscher der Berge. Aber was waren das für seltsame Bretter an seinen Füßen? Aus Dankbarkeit, dass die Jungen den Fremden nicht an die Polizei verraten haben, die in ihm nur einen Schmuggler sehen, erfüllt der Berggeist Matthias und Jan einen Wunsch. Er schenkt ihnen die Zauberbretter. Damit beginnt ein Verwirrspiel, in dessen Lauf nicht nur die Jungen der Faszination des Skifahrens erliegen. (Verleiher-Text)

Along with Boys Will Be Boys, this is the best film by director Věra Plívová-Šimková, which is unusually set in the past at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of her work. A poetically crafted film about the history of the region where the director grew up is primarily intended for children, which is also reflected in the choice of film language and narrative structure. Boys' adventures, games, and merriment in confrontation with the sometimes incomprehensible adult world are intertwined with the legend of the ruler of the mountains - Krakonos. Overall impression: 75%.
