Erst sprayen zwei Freundinnen rebellisch „Fuck the Patriarchy“ an eine Häusermauer, wenig später kämpfen sie gemeinsam mit anderen Frauen in einem abgesperrten Waldgebiet gegen eine Handvoll Killer. Neben furchteinflößenden Masken trägt die mörderische Truppe vor allem schweres Geschütz bei sich, um ihren Opfern mit der Axt den Schädel zu spalten oder sie sonst wie an der Flucht zu hindern. Aber es wird nicht lange dauern, bis das Blatt sich wendet, denn plötzlich werden aus den gejagten Frauen todeshungrige Furien, die ihren Peinigern eiskalt ihre Rache servieren. (WVG Medien)

Eine australische Schlächterei mit einem abgeleierten, nur wenig abgeänderten Stoff. Eine überflüssig übertriebene Brutalität, eine billige Arbeit mit dem Verhalten der Figuren und daraus folgende möchtegern überraschende Wenden. Es scheint so, als ob die Autoren nicht gewusst hätten, dass auch ein Slasher-Film eine intelligente Arbeit mit den Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern erfordert.

A battle royale with references to slashers of the last century, it pretty much delivers on the level it promised. I mean, perfect gore, excellent make-up effects, the creators won me over in this respect, but the rest falls flat. The actresses are unfortunately terrible, the visuals look cheap and the final twist is a rip-off to more famous horror movies. Thus, I recommend it only for gore fans, everyone else can ignore it. 60%

If you like bloody carnage in the popular setting of a remote forest and all you need is a mindless showcase of stabbing tools and deaths, you will surely enjoy The Furies. But if you believe that horror creators should know how to work with the viewer, pinpoint the tension, creatively alter the shape of the scenes and escalate the events, then don’t expect much. Although I am a fan of this kind of enthusiast work and appreciate every new idea, this Australian attempt is only halfway between a loose violent ride and dark horror, where the relationships among the characters and a personal revenge are also at stake. That said, for underground horror festivals or a night screening over a beer, Furies is alright. Strong 2*.

The Australian co-production The Furies is an interesting example of how to make a great slasher movie in terms of the kills and their depiction and imagination. However, the story is a real bummer as it is really bloated, which presents a bit of a problem. It is as if the attempt at originality here has gone completely awry. It just does not work, and I am sure it will be a disappointment for many viewers.
