Csorba Márton, having served a fifteen-year sentence for murder, just out of prison and on his way home, his native village, saves the life of Bakaj Erzsike, daughter of Bakaj András, a wealthy farmer. He notices the young girl drowning in the Tisza, which has flooded the region. Laci, Csorba's son, is about to marry Erzsike. The otherwise long-forgotten father's surprise appearance separates Laci from his sweetheart. Stigmatised by his father's past, Laci realises that he is unworthy of the girl and, in defiance of the civilised world, chooses the kind of outlaw's life his father used to live. It turns out, in the meantime, that the murder was committed by Bakaj András, a farmer now well-off and respected all over the place, not Márton, who never did more than steal one or two colts. Csorba Márton has no intention of ruining the happiness of his son, therefore he decides not to take revenge on Bakaj. Instead, Csorba makes it up with him and proudly conveys through Bakaj a proposal on behalf of his son to Erzsike, Bakaj's daughter. (Verleiher-Text)
