Für Dewey Finn hat das Leben nur einen Sinn: Rock-Musik! Doch als der passionierte Rocker von seiner Band gefeuert wird, steht er vor einem geplatzten Traum und einem Berg Schulden. Per Zufall kommt er an eine Stelle als Aushilfslehrer an einer Privatschule. Mit seiner unkonventionellen Art gewinnt er schnell das Vertrauen der Schüler und entschließt sich, aus ihnen eine Rockband zu formen, die einen Nachwuchsband-Wettbewerb gewinnen und so seinen Ruf wiederherstellen soll.
