Bille is a little girl no one thinks will amount to anything. So she decides to show everyone what is really inside her! Life in Latvia in the 1930s isn’t easy for a little girl from impoverished conditions who is always reminded that she will never amount to anything. But Bille does not give in to the incessant belittling by those around her, and instead grows up strengthened and firmly convinced she wants to accomplish something in her life and never, ever give up. This family film about hope and the strength of the human will was based on the autobiographical novel of author Vizma Belševica. (Days of European Film)

Wie hier schon mal erwähnt wurde, es ist eine lettische Version von dem tschechisch-slowakisch-dänischen Film Barefoot. Der Film bietet uns nämlich eine bezaubernde Atmosphäre in Riga der dreißiger Jahre an, nicht weniger herrliches Dorfleben, vielfältige Meinungen und Wahrheiten, den Einblick in das anstrengende Leben von Menschen, die nicht ahnten, dass der Krieg kommt, eine Menge an positiven Zuständen eines Kindsgemütes, was hier perfekt dargestellt wird, und vor allem eine hervorragende Filmqualität auf allen Ebenen, die zu den Letten einfach gehört und anerkannt werden muss. Mir hat dieser Film sehr gut gefallen und bin froh, dass ich ihn dank Cinemax sehen konnte und das Leben einer Dichterin, die es bis zur Nominierung auf den Nobel Preis erreicht hat, kennenlernen konnte.

In conjunction with the beautiful poetry of life in the countryside, they allowed the viewer to glimpse into a period when the personality and mind of a muse-kissed girl were being formed. Little Bille didn't exactly have an easy time, yet she didn't give up on her dreams, and in the end, she became a recognized writer and poet. I can't help but think she would have loved this film inspired by her autobiographical novel. (80%)
