Francin, a brewery manager, sometimes feels like a hunted man. What he'd like most is to please the board of directors in order to keep his job. He also desires some quiet happiness with his beautiful wife Maryška. But Maryška herself is an obstacle. This passionate lover of life cares little about social conventions, but all of the members of the board adore her. Francin therefore does not know how to tame her. To add to his problems, his boisterous brother Pepin moves in with them. His ideas attract Maryška like a moth to a flame! These two find ways to cause trouble that the manager would rather not see... (Zlín Film Festival)

Lovely. And as with many of the better films of this era, Cutting It Short benefits from fewer reruns.

Menzel was able to shoot beautiful films and this is one of them. "Closely Watched Trains" probably got me a bit more, but the beautiful poetry of this film and especially its brilliant, Hrabal-like characters are simply so beautiful that it cannot be otherwise than for the film to enchant you. And yet, it's only about one brewery and one beautiful stationmaster.
