Seit der Vernichtung der Jedi-Ritter steht die GaIaxie unter der grausamen Herrschaft des lmperiums. Nur eine kIeine Gruppe von RebeIIen, angeführt von der schönen Prinzessin Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), widersetzt sich der dunklen Macht. Als es ihnen gelingt, die geheimen BaupIäne für den gefährlichen Todesstern zu entwenden, gerät das lmperium in Aufruhr. Durch ZufaIl geIangen die PIäne ausgerechnet in die Hände des Farmersjungen Luke SkywaIker (Mark Hamill), der spürt, dass er sein bisheriges Leben hinter sich Iassen muss. Gemeinsam mit dem weisen Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), den Weltraumabenteurern Han Solo (Harrison Ford) und Chewbacca sowie den Droiden R2-D2 und C-3PO nimmt er den Kampf gegen das mächtige lmperium auf. Es beginnt ein WettIauf gegen die Zeit, denn der Kampfstern kann nur vor seiner Fertigstellung zerstört werden - und der finstere Darth Vader (David Prowse) ist ihnen dicht auf den Fersen.
