Serious topics through the innocent view of a carefree childhood in the French countryside during the occupation. You will recognize a more dramatic variation on We were a handful or Le Petit Nicolas (in terms of visuals it refers to Sempé's illustrations). Basically, it is kind of an animated version of Sverák's book Barefoot, but captured in a more dramatic way. It is the atmosphere of adolescence during historical events as one great adventure covering almost five years that is portrayed with magnificence. Mainly thanks to the vivid characters, who you will care for more than one would expect at the beginning. Lion´s share, among other things, on this has screenplay by Timothée de Fombelle (well known in Czech mainly thanks to Vang or Tobias Lolness), he seems to portray such topics seemingly for children / young people, but at the core for everyone "who still has a soul of a rogue thirsty for adventure". He is so good at this as few others are. In addition, he shows real memories of the witnesses, displaced children themselves. Although in the Czech republic we will (not able to) watch 10 episodes (there is also a version with five episodes, where each two episodes are combined into one) in the afternoon on Czech TV children channel D, but that´s one of those shows you make sure not to miss and watch it with you kids. If it had not been “only" an animated movie, it would have been broadcast in prime time on CT1. (09.05.2018)
