1925. Der junge Lehrer Bertram T. Cates bringt die Mitglieder der fundamentalistischen Gemeinde von Hillsboro im amerikanischen Süden gegen sich auf: Er wagt es, seine Schüler mit der Lehre Darwins vertraut zu machen, die besagt, dass der Mensch ein Geschöpf der Evolution ist. Auf Betreiben des militanten Reverends Brown wird er festgenommen und muss sich vor Gericht verantworten. Der sogenannte „Affenprozess" schlägt weithin Wellen. Der renommierte Journalist Hornbeck vom „Baltimore Herald" sorgt dafür, dass Cates mit Henry Drummond einen erfolgreichen Verteidiger bekommt; die Anklage übernimmt Matthew Harrison Brady, ein ähnlicher Eiferer wie Reverend Brown. Damit stoßen im Gerichtssaal zwei äußerst konträre Positionen aufeinander: Drummond steht für die Freiheit der Rede und des Denkens, Brady führt dagegen einen religiösen Fundamentalismus ins Feld, für den jedes Wort der Bibel die letzte Wahrheit ist ... Stanley Kramers packender Film basiert auf einem Bühnenstück, dem wiederum ein historischer Prozess aus dem Jahre 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee, zugrunde lag. (arte)

Gone are the days when films were made exclusively without money and for the love of the craft, when the idea of the work was more important than fancy glitter, and when filmmakers could write dialogue that gave the viewer goosebumps and made their brain work at full speed. Such films used to be made in the U.S. and, world wonder, they weren't afraid to take on the belief in God himself from the ground up, which is a good thing, because I can hardly imagine anything more disgusting than a sycophantic religious freak who at the mention of a monkey starts hitting you over the head with a crucifix while reciting a passage about the creation of the world as if in a trance. Stanley Kramer was an exceptional director, and Inherit the Wind remains for me even today one of the smartest and most brilliantly written films I've ever seen with the approval of the church. (It may not mean that much coming from me, but in all modesty I don't consider it a completely insignificant praise either) :-) 95%
