Old Men in New Cars

Rather a weak sequel (or rather, prequel), but still an excellent black comedy. Because the story takes place before part one, it makes the return of some of the characters possible (that’s right, mainly good old Vuk), but it is also the greatest mistake of the movie. While in part one, the whole movie was concerned with the younger brother and his slow descent down a slippery slope, this time round the movie concentrates on the psychopath. And the story just isn’t as well-written as in part one. Part two is more of an incohesive patchwork of crazy plans, killing, setting people etc. But it still works, although there aren’t as many unforgettable scenes as last time. Of the new characters, only the enamored couple catches the imagination and none of the couples here are at all normal. Otherwise, here there are more dead bodies, fewer snappy lines, fewer unforgettable scenes, and about the same number of moments to make you laugh. Simply a very quality black comedy with all the trimmings. (28.01.2005)
