Budapest, 1948. Gyula Molnár, interpreter to the Supervisory Committee of the Allied Powers, is carried away from a party by plain-cloth police investigators. Recsk, 1950. Molnár, having attempted an escape and with a wound made by a bullet in his neck - is doggedly trying to get into the brigade of brick-layers, as escape is easiest from there. Lieutenant Nagy wants to make him into an informer, whereby he speeds up the carrying into effect of Molnárs plan. Seven men take part in the carefully organized escape. Two are almost immediately captured. Stern, who sees himself as a generally lucky guy, is also caught, and is soon followed by Mendel. The wounded Mózes is killed by a straying bullet. Only Molnár and the former member of the State Security Agency, Őri, make it to Budapest. The desire to revenge himself is stronger in Őri, and he visits his wife who now lives with his former boss. The policemen of the State Security Agency await him there. Molnár, with the help of his French friends, makes it to Austria. Through Radio Free Europe, he tells the world the names of the prisoners at the Recsk camp, memorized with a hope of survival. (Verleiher-Text)
