Tief im Sumpfland von Bayou liegt das abgewrackte “Starlight Motel”. Hier hausen Maniac Judd und sein Killerkrokodil. Viele Gäste wurden schon bei lebendigem Leibe gefressen, aber als Judd seinem Liebling eine lokale Hure zum Fraß vorwirft, hat er sich das falsche Opfer ausgesucht – der Beginn eines blutigen Schlachtfestes! Nein, hier hat mich Hooper überhaupt nicht angesprochen. Mit diesem Stück erinnert es ein wenig an sein berühmtes vorheriges Debüt, und zwar vor allem wegen der absolut verrückten Atmosphäre und Paranoia, aber es will seine Ware nicht nur kopieren, deshalb geht es noch weiter. Eine ordentliche Portion Nacktheit, Robert Englund, der rattig wie eine Bergziege herumläuft, ein bisschen Gore und vor allem ein immer hungriges Krokodil aus Gummi oder Styropor(?). Das alles klingt schön, besonders wenn man den manischen Veteranen mit der geschärften Sense dazuzählt, aber in Wirklichkeit ist es vor allem langweilig. Abgesehen von zwei gelungenen Szenen und einem etwas spannenderen Ende hat es nichts, was den heutigen erfahrenen Zuschauer interessiert oder sogar umwirft! Hier wird viel geschrien und geredet, dafür wird hier zu wenig gemetzelt! Das Panoptikum machte mir mehr Spaß.

Hooper fascinates me, first he makes the best horror film of all time, where every aspect works to perfection and fulfils its purpose, and then he produces something not unlike the limited fantasies of a patient of a polio sanatory. Every now and then a glimmer of an interesting idea flashes through, and it reeks of a kind of reverence for the classics of the genre in addition to narcissistic self-reference, but this sort of desecration of intelligence and taste is the last thing classics (including Hooper's previous film) deserve. There is a lack of logic, a lack of characters that aren't moronic, and a complete lack of necessary perspective. And a pair of boobs and one Robert Englund wisecrack are not enough to save it.

Yes, Hooper tried to smuggle in some different elements into the film, there are scenes that are noticeably well done, especially the chase of the little girl with the scythe in hand, but suddenly you realize that this actually doesn't differ much from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and Hooper himself began to plagiarize his masterpiece three years later. Of course, he had the right to do so, others did it too and much worse, but nowadays this film probably won't succeed with the majority of the audience, mainly due to the lack of a story. Those few really good scenes won't save it.
