Dies ist eine Liebesgeschichte und zugleich das eindringliche Portrait einer verlorenen Seele, die einfach nicht mit ihrer Vergangenheit abschließen kann. Nach einem Motorradrennen in New Hampshire lädt Bud Clay sein Motorrad in den Van und begibt sich auf eine Odyssee quer durch das ganze Land bis nach L. A., wo er für das nächste Rennen angemeldet ist. Unterwegs lernt er drei sehr unterschiedliche Frauen kennen: Violet, eine bodenständige, typisch amerikanische Tankwartin, Lilly, selbst eine verlorene Seele, die er auf einem Rastplatz am Highway trifft, und Rose, eine Prostituierte aus Las Vegas. Auf seiner langen Reise gelingt es Bud nicht, seine intensiven Gefühlen zu Daisy, der großen Liebe seines Lebens, zu vergessen. Deshalb will er sich mit ihr versöhnen, sobald er in L. A. eintrifft. Dort checkt Bud in ein Motel ein und sucht das verlassene Haus auf, in dem er früher mit Daisy lebte. In der Hoffnung, dass sie zu seinem Hotelzimmer kommt, hinterlässt er ihr eine Nachricht. Während der Film sich zu seinem dramatischen Höhepunkt aufbaut, zeichnet er eines der offensten, freizügigsten Portraits männlicher Sexualität, die das amerikanische Kino je gezeigt hat.
