Szabó Boldizsár, a descendent from a nobleman's family grown poor, starts his job as a book agent. He has to sell a book entitled How to become rich. He starts his work in the manor-house of count Nyulassy and his family. Boldizsár is an enthusiast but lacks expertise. Instead of making a good deal, he is ripped off by the family, now impoverished but pretending to be still well-off. His book having been taken away by the countess and his money won by her at cards, his car having been stolen and sold by count Frici, Boldizsár himself fallen in love with Dóra, only to be used by her to make her fiancé jealous, the young man, despaired, is about to hang himself, but Dóra intervenes, having realized that she is in love with him.
