Family secrets can leave scars for several generations, as this Croatian director well knows. In this very personal film, she reveals the repressive methods of the Communist regime in the 1950s. Her grandfather Marijan was a successful executive when he suddenly disappeared. He returned four years later with scars all over his body. For the rest of his life, he lived in fear and shame of discussing the torture he suffered in the infamous prison on Naked Island. Assembled from eyewitness accounts and archival material, the film focuses on this dark period of the former Yugoslavia, whose dictatorial regime used the cruellest methods to silence its opponents.
