1862. Vámbéry Ármin - as Resid effendi - finally is able to join a caravan heading for Bokhara. The journey across the desert seriously challenges the scientist who has been lame since his childhood. During the trip he manages to close a friendship with Mirzo, librarian of the Emir in Bokhara, who is not only a support for him in trouble, but he also helps him to get into the strictly guarded library in order to scrutinize the manuscripts talking about the origin of the Hungarians. After the death of the old Emir Resid effendi is imprisoned as a stranger. Rumours about his death are spread several times by he gets back home after many years, having his task fulfilled.
