One of the last films to have been shot on 35mm film, Tsuta's visually striking film captures different groups of people in the midst of a tunnel construction project in a beautiful mountain village: some oppose it, some want the advantages for the economy of the village. A young man leaves his life in Tokyo behind and enters the scene. Meanwhile, an old man and his adopted daughter continue their life in the mountains in the ancient, nature respecting way.

Englisch The Iya Valley is a beautiful place. You're there and you really want to enjoy it – you even spend the silly bus ride from Awa-Ikeda eagerly watching everything flash by out the window of the speeding bus. Iya is still exactly as the film shows her. Maybe not for much longer, but it showed her off beautifully. Moreover, it addressed a number of topics, planted a seed, and left it to its conditions to see if it sprouts. Grandpa won't talk to us. Slowly, someone always becomes the grandfather. And time has passed, the seasons have changed, and Iya has continued to be beautiful and ruthless. I'm leaning towards 3 stars for now, but maybe it will go up to 4. ()
