Es ist die Nacht vom 24. auf den 25. August 1944. Die Alliierten stehen vor den Toren von Paris. Adolf Hitler hat den Befehl erteilt, die französische Hauptstadt dürfe "nicht oder nur als Trümmerfeld in die Hand des Feindes fallen". Kurz vor Tagesanbruch bereitet sich Dietrich von Choltitz (Niels Arestrup), Kommandierender General von Groß-Paris, in seinem Hauptquartier im Hotel Meurice darauf vor, Hitlers Befehl auszuführen und die Stadt dem Erdboden gleichzumachen. Alles ist vorbereitet: Die Brücken über der Seine, die Kathedrale Notre-Dame, der Louvre, Sacré-Coeur, Place de la Concorde und der Eiffelturm sind bereits vermint - doch in letzter Minute verhindert von Choltitz die Sprengung, Paris wird nicht zerstört. Was bewegt den als gnadenlos befehlstreu geltenden General die Anordnung des "Führers" nicht auszuführen? Sind es moralische Bedenken oder der Druck der alliierten Mächte? Eine entscheidende Rolle spielt dabei Raoul Nordling (André Dussollier), der schwedische Generalkonsul von Paris. Doch wie schafft es der kluge Diplomat, den deutschen Stadtkommandanten von seinem Vorhaben abzubringen? In einer Nacht von historischer Tragweite kommt es zu einem verbalen Kräftemessen zweier gänzlich unterschiedlicher Männer... (Koch Media)

Excellently-written dialogue, excellent directing and outstanding performances by both leads André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup make this conversational drama an unprecedentedly suspenseful spectacle. I would like to thank the creators for the fascinating opportunity to look behind the scenes of the Second World War, as I had no idea about the complexities of what went on in Paris. (80%)

An absolutely exquisite dialogue-based movie, which focuses not only on my favorite period, but also a specific situation I’m interested in. Niels Arestrup and André Dussollier are both delivering performances that are absolutely out of this world. They’re on opposite sides but they are trying to find common ground. This movie reminded me a lot of The Sunset Limited, which, however, dealt with the topic of faith. Anyhow, the future of Paris is also an interesting premise. And I must say that these 85 minutes were totally worth it!

I like the premise that most filmmakers make historical films grandly and focus on battles, on wars, but in the case of this film set in the time of World War II, the creators approached it differently. It is actually a very intimate drama that must look great on stage - after all, it is also a film adaptation of a play. But even in the film, the acting prowess of the performers and the excellent dialogues are shown.
