Die Collegestudenten und Computerfreaks Nic (Brenton Thwaites) und Jonah (Beau Knapp) sind gemeinsam mit Nics Freundin Haley (Olivia Cooke) auf einem Trip durch den Südwesten der USA, als sie ein Signal ihres geheimnisvollen Hacker-Rivalen Nomad aufspüren. Ihre Suche führt sie in eine abgelegene, einsame Gegend Nevadas. In einem verfallenen Haus mitten im Nirgendwo glauben sie, Nomad gefunden zu haben, doch plötzlich wird Haley entführt und Jonah und Nic verlieren das Bewusstsein. Als Nic erwacht, befindet er sich offenbar in einem von der Außenwelt isolierten Forschungslabor. Er weiß nicht, was mit seinen Freunden passiert ist, und muss sich den unangenehmen Fragen eines mysteriösen Mannes (Laurence Fishburne) stellen. Was zuerst wie eine Verwechslung aussieht, wird für die drei Freunde schnell zu einem ausgewachsenen Albtraum ... (Capelight Pictures)

Maybe if Eubank didn't try so hard to make a small big film and didn't experiment with a handheld camera in the style of The Blair Witch Project or with psychedelic scenes like in Mulholand Drive, this could have been a really good instead of an ambiguous mess with a few interesting moments and a decent finale.

I like Eubank’s work, I really enjoyed the emotional Love. The Signal is more plot centred and even though it doesn’t hit the bullseye, at least it aims in the right direction. It can be mysterious and slightly unsettling, and brings up interesting questions as any proper mystery film should do. But Eubank sort of lost me after the story leaves the lab, because there were already too many of those “weird things without answers”. Overall, slightly above average and I’m certainly curious about his next movie.

It is developing excellently, excellent, but then suddenly there is a turning point and it is no longer the same. At times, it is horrifying, at times incredibly action-packed, but when you look at it as a whole, you actually feel like you have watched something meaningless. With this movie, I had the feeling that the last scene should actually be the beginning.
