Golf von Mexiko, 2010: Eine Bohrinsel steht in Flammen, das austretende Rohöl richtet verheerende ökologische und wirtschaftliche Schäden an. In diesen harten Zeiten findet der Abgeordnete Colin Pryce (Nicolas Cage) großen Beifall, als er sich für die kleinen Leute starkmacht, die nach der Katastrophe alles verloren haben und um ihre Existenz kämpfen. Die öffentliche Meinung ändert sich allerdings schnell, als pikante Details aus Pryce' Privatleben in der Presse auftauchen, ein handfester Skandal braut sich zusammen. Zusehends scheint Pryce die Kontrolle über die Situation, sein Privatleben und seine unterdrückte Alkoholsucht zu verlieren ... (Splendid Film)
