João de Santo Cristo verlässt seine verarmte Heimat im Hinterland Bahias, um in Brasília sein Glück zu machen. Mit Hilfe seines Cousins Pablo findet er bald Arbeit – wird aber auch ins Drogengeschäft seines zwielichtigen Verwandten verstrickt. Als er eines Tages die schöne Senatorentochter Maria Lúcia kennen und lieben lernt, will João das von Repression und Racheakten geprägte Milieu hinter sich lassen – aber so einfach ist das nicht zu bewerkstelligen. Lately, I have seen a Brazilian exploitation horror, a Brazilian comedy, and now even a drama, where romance plays a significant role. I have to say that precisely this drama, I mean "Faroeste Caboclo", a bit stylized as a modern western, is the best out of all three. It is interestingly crafted and original, but still, it is not a cohesive film that maintains its quality until the end. Nevertheless, it shows that good dramas can be made anywhere.
