Nazif and his wife Senada are Roma and live in poor conditions in the outskirts of Sarajevo. While Nazif attempts to earn money by selling scrap metal gained from wrecked cars, his wife looks after the household and their two daughters. When one day she develops severe abdominal pain and finds out at the hospital that her unborn child is dead, good advice turns out to be expensive: Senada might become septic and the family cannot afford the urgently needed operation. Since she lacks insurance the hospital refuses treatment. A fight against time, death and hopelessness ensues... (drei-freunde)

This is quite a powerful episode from life. We can argue about the extent to which the protagonists' inertia is self-inflicted, but the way Danis Tanović portrays the hopelessness of their situation, through the seeming banalities of everyday life, to the desperate steps people are willing to take to save their loved ones, simply works. It’s not that I was fundamentally moved by it - the film isn't trying to do that - but it certainly did make me think.

Die besten sozialen Dramen spielen sich in diesem Jahr auf Mülldeponien ab. Kompromissloser Verismus, bei dem mich anfangs die thematische Präsenz der Kamera etwas gestört hat (im Gegensatz zu den Passagen, die im Gegensatz dazu mit rein filmischen Verfahren arbeiten), jedoch am Ende faszinierte er mich dank der Kombination aus Dringlichkeit und Lethargie. Ein weiterer Film, welcher die Möglichkeit gleich mehrerer Herangehensweisen eröffnet, ohne jedoch irgendeine von ihnen aufzudrängen und auch das Wichtigste bietet - einen rohen Ausschnitt der Realität, welchen der Betrachter "durchleben" und selbst verarbeiten muss. Tanović ist sicherlich kein solch erfahrener Vermittler "sozialer Not" wie zum Beispiel Fliegauf, aber hier hat er den sprichwörtlichen Nagel genau auf den Kopf getroffen. [80%]

It's a pretty simple, though at first glance quite powerful, story about how things can turn out when you can't afford proper health care. It's good how it's filmed with non-actors - at least I think so - because it comes across quite authentically. However, when the film ended, I suddenly realized that it didn't do anything for me.
