Ein Schneewittchen, wie es sich die Gebrüder Grimm nicht besser hätten erträumen können - stumm, schwarzweiß und angesiedelt im Spanien der 20er Jahre: Carmen ist die Tochter eines berühmten Matadors, der nach einem Stierkampf im Rollstuhl endet. Die böse Stiefmutter verdammt das kleine Mädchen zu den niedrigsten Arbeiten und versucht nach dem Tod des Vaters auch sie zu beseitigen. Als ihr die Flucht zu einer Schaustellertruppe kleinwüchsiger Toreros gelingt, entdeckt Carmen ihre wahre Berufung und wird zur Königin der Corridas. Doch kann sie ihrem Märchenschicksal entkommen?
BLANCANIEVES bleibt als brillante Hommage an die europäische Stummästhetik dem finsteren Geist des Märchens treu: Phantasie, Dramatik, Humor und Emotionen, gewürzt mit einer gehörigen Prise dunklen, bösen, bisweilen abgründigen Weimarer Kinos, umgesetzt in kristallklaren Bildern zu einem opulenten Soundtrack – einfach märchenhaft!

The third bloody movie about Snow White from 2012. This one takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in Sevilla, Spain, among bullfights, and the name of the heroine is Carmen. The movie is also black and white and silent, and it’s certainly a coincidence that it came out about a year after the Oscar winner, and also silent, The Artist. I don’t know who had the great idea of making this, but it has attracted quite a lot of people who spent a pleasant moment with this Southern European retro Snow White (18 nominations for the Goya Awards). My congratulations, but to celebrate Spanish filmography, I will have to wait for one of those nice atmospheric thrillers or horror movies.

A slightly different take on Snow White and her story, this time focusing on the form and shifting it to Spain a hundred years ago. Silent films don't get that much attention, but they still look good. Just as interesting is the colorful execution. However, the story itself doesn't offer anything additional, so credit goes to the form and to the midgets, who express a lot through silence.
