Benares, Indien: Im Mittelpunkt steht das Schicksal zweier junger Menschen, die – gebeutelt durch sozialen Druck, Kastenschranken und Armut – am Ufer des Ganges aufwachsen. Eine von ihnen ist Devi, deren romantische Affäre mit dem Studenten Piyush von der Polizei unterbunden wird und mit Piyushs Selbstmord endet. Nun muss sie versuchen, aus ihrem Gefängnis von Trauer und Schuldgefühlen zu entkommen, sowie einen korrupten Polizisten bezahlen, der ihre Geschichte publik machen will. Im selben Viertel wie Devi wohnt auch Deepak, der kurz vor seinem Abschluss in Bauingenieurwesen steht und eine aussichtsreiche Zukunft vor sich hat. Doch er gehört einer niedrigen Kaste an, was er seiner neuen Freundin Sadhya verschweigt. Auch ihre Beziehung findet ein jähes Ende. Weder Devi noch Deepak finden sich aber damit ab. (arte)

“What is life? The balance of the five elements. What is death? Their disbalance.” - I am glad that there are authors in India who want to tell the local life stories the way the audience is used to with European films, for example – realistically. Without colorful flourish, embellishments, Indian dances or the endless local jolly music. Still, it took a while before I got used to the Fly Away Solo. Nevertheless, the beautiful shots of the apparently nicer part of India (not a single piece of garbage in sight) and the final fusion of two, until then very different, human stories, really made me happy. This is also what life can be.
