Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) und Charlie (Aaron Paul) sind frisch verheiratet. Ihre Beziehung beruht auf ihrer gemeinsamen Liebe zur Musik, zum Vergnügen und zum Alkohol... insbesondere zum Alkohol. Nachdem Kates Sucht sie selbst und ihren Job als Grundschullehrerin in Gefahr gebracht hat, entschließt sie sich mithilfe der AA dem Alkohol abzuschwören. Dank ihrer neuen Freundin und Sponsorin Jenny (Octavia Spencer) sowie Mr. Davies, dem eigenartigen, aber wohlmeinenden Konrektor ihrer Schule, findet Kate langsam zu einer gesunden Lebensweise zurück. Doch nüchtern zu sein ist schwerer, als Kate gedacht hatte. In ihrem neuen Leben muss sie sich nicht nur mit der problematischen Beziehung zu ihrer Mutter und den Konsequenzen der Unaufrichtigkeit gegenüber ihrer Arbeitgeberin auseinandersetzen, sondern sich auch die Frage stellen, ob ihre Beziehung zu Charlie auf wahrer Liebe oder vielmehr auf jugendlicher Vergnügungssucht beruht. This movie was supposed to show me a proper American alcoholic. However, I was expecting a little more vomiting, a bit worse living conditions, and overall, I was hoping that an American alcoholic was something like the people I meet at a bus stop, when I leave the Brandejs pub at night. But I didn’t expect how refined an American alcoholic is. In that instance this drama became a fairly ordinary affair with an absolutely ordinary plot and an even more obvious conclusion. If I went to the worst local pub in my neighborhood, stood at the bar and ordered a beer, I would talk to far more interesting local characters than what this film offered me. Well, I get it, the USA is not the Czech Republic. So many countries, so many customs.

Things that were fun are not fun anymore. Isn't that a perfect sentence summarizing addiction and its impact on a person? Mary Elizabeth Winstead shows that she is a great actress, and you will believe her as an alcoholic who wants to get treatment. It's not a nice story. It's not as ugly as it could be, but it still makes a strong impression on you. Drugs are disgusting, but alcohol is too. It's not groundbreaking, but it's good to be reminded of it from time to time.
