Ender's Game

Even as someone who hasn’t read the book, I feel the filmmakers had to leave a lot out and use many plot shortcuts, because the themes and ideas that they tap (and also leave untapped) are really a lot for those 115 minutes. The good thing, though, is that what remained makes pretty good sense, while at the same time it’s not hard to imagine those things that didn’t make the cut. After the awful Wolverine, I wasn’t expecting much from Gavin Hood, but he turned out to be a pleasant surprise and delivered one of the purest sci-fi movies of the year. With its detachment and lack of user-friendliness, Ender’s Game is not likely to make many fans among the average cinemagoers, but those who prefer something like Starship Troopers or Lord of the Flies over another happy blockbuster about a young, brave hero who saves the world from an extraterrestrial invasion shouldn’t miss it. Ich wünschte mir es, doch ich habe es nicht geglaubt. Ich habe auf eine Soft-Version von Card für Teenager gewartet, jedoch Hood hat mich angenehm überrascht. Er hat sämtliche wichtigen thematischen Elemente aus der Vorlage beibehalten, diese lediglich komprimiert, etwas gekürzt und merklich vereinfacht (der größte Teil der irdischen Linie fehlt, ebenso etliche Kadettenepisoden). Ich vermisse ein bisschen die präzisere Änderung der Hauptfigur, jedoch ist es Butterfield selbst auf kleinem Raum gelungen Enders inneres Dilemma gut aufzufassen. Die kühle, mechanische Regieführung bewahrt sich manchmal die Atmosphäre des Originals, und obwohl die zweite Hälfte etwas an Fahrt verliert (auch aufgrund der Tatsache, dass Enders Beziehung zu seiner Schwester / seinem Bruder eher als zweckgerichtetes Erklärungsinstrument denn als funktionaler Aspekt der Erzählung ist), ist das Finale ebenso unangenehm und schwierig, wie es eben sein sollte. Als einzige unglückliche Entscheidung zur Anpassung erachte ich die Komprimierung des Zeitrahmens. Letztendlich kommt die Pointe besser zur Geltung, wenn sie sich über einen Horizont von Jahren und nicht von Tagen erstreckt (im Film entscheidet man sich natürlich einen dramatischeren und engeren Rahmen, was der Dringlichkeit der Botschaft nicht unbedingt dient). Die aufgepeppelten visuellen Aspekte sind eher ein Bonus, denn lediglich dank ihnen würde der Film nicht funktionieren. Das Zusammenspiel der Charaktere (und Fords große Rückkehr!) sowie der störende emotionale Rückzug sind von grundlegender Bedeutung. Ender und seine Welt müssen wir gar nicht lieben lernen - es wäre jedoch angebracht, ihn entweder zu respektieren oder zu hassen, ganz im Einklang mit einer streng rationalen Vorlage. Dementsprechend ist nämlich Ender's Game filmemacherisch ein solcher Endemit. Ich habe keine Ahnung, wo er seine Fanbasis finden wird - außer des Territoriums der Liebhaber von Old-School-Sci-Fi-Filmen (mehr Ideen als Spaß und Geglitzer). Es ist ein vollblütiger, düsterer und ungewöhnlich ehrgeiziger Science-Fiction-Film, der es zwar nicht vermag, in die Gedanken eines brillanten Kriegsherrn / Killers so tief vorzudringen, wie in der Buchvorlage, doch zumindest behauptet sich das ganze als attraktive Ergänzung dazu. Auch deshalb, weil es einfach ist, hier die fehlenden Zusammenhänge sowie den angedeuteten Kontext hineinzuschreiben. Hood bleibt schlichtweg in außergewöhnlichem Maße pietätsvoll ... wobei seine Einzigartigkeit durch Einsamkeit belohnt wird, selbst Ender weiß das nur allzu gut ... [75%] (30.10.2013)

An adaptation of a readers, awards and time tested prolog to one of the best literary sci-fi’s ever (yes, I mean “Speaker for the Dead"). The book works with purely adult, timeless themes seen through the eyes of children for greater chilling effect (a sort of “Lord of the Flies" in space) and, to the credit of the filmmakers, the movie tries to do the same. The problem is that it merely tries. However, it is prevented from succeeding because the characters are too pruned down and consequently one-dimensional, so we can’t get far enough into Ender’s skin. Plus, a clash of two approaches cries out from the entire movie; a faithful, coolly detached, toned down adaptation “about something" and audience-pleasing, multi-colored, glittering scenes aimed at tickling your insides. Ender’s Game is very good as an illustration of its source material. The film retains the full range of motifs from Card’s phenomenal book. In spite of that, however, the conversion from one medium to another still doesn’t work nearly as well as it does in, for example, Watchmen. The weakness of Ender’s Game in this case lies in the fact that, unlike Watchmen, it doesn’t involve a narrative in which the characters are symbols or, more precisely, different facets of a central theme, but rather that the title character is at its centre. Throughout the book, Ender undergoes complex development and the narrative carefully constructs the different facets and aspects of his personality. All of this is left out of the film and, in an effort to preserve all of the key plot points, the film simply rushes from one scene to the next instead of engaging in the deeper depiction and psychologising of the character. It is necessary to acknowledge that when the viewer analyses the film, it’s possible to find fragments of a rather complex character. However, when actually watching the film, one finds that Ender inevitably remains only a puppet dragged from one twist to another. If the filmmakers had used the interludes between sequences to focus on the protagonist and his loneliness and inner feelings instead of on gratuitous money shots of space, Ender’s Game might have turned out even better. They filmed it right. It could have been done a tad better - more desolate, but even so it’s a breath of fresh air among the sci-fi fantasies of recent times. The spirit of Card’s book was maintained, meaning some truncation and slight speeding up, but this helps the story. Hood is clearly a fan and does his very best. Visually, Ender’s Game glitters like an A-movie blockbuster, but the plot is more profound than theater audiences are used to and a lot of them will leave the theater feeling they’ve been robbed. They won’t understand the ingenious ending or they won’t like it. Perfect build-up in battles, not a boring movie and gallons of emotion can be squeezed out of the graduation. The casting is marvelous, especially the kids and Asa Butterfield has no problem selling her character to the viewer. Maybe they should have chosen a bigger fanatic than Ford. Jablonsky again serves up marvelous themes. I wonder if he record furniture. (06.11.2013)

Smart and intelligent sci-fi, thematically quite original and rather dark. Occasionally it reminded me of some non-action passages from Minority Report with its gloominess and detachment. But it is extremely unfriendly towards the audience. Some will admire this film, while the majority will see it once and give a nod of agreement. It is not pleasant sci-fi, it is a probe into the mind of a killer. Excellent psychology, rather iconic action. (02.11.2013)

Da ich die literarische Vorlage nicht kannte, konnte ich mich überraschen lassen. Und es gab viele Überraschungen. Der Film ist unerwartet ernst, es wird in ihm viel gesprochen und gespielt. Die Tricks und die Action spielen keine große Rolle, worüber ich mich sehr gefreut habe. Der Hauptheld ist kein klassischer quengeliger armer Kerl, dem niemand traut, sondern ein selbstbewusster junger Mann, der seine Ziele verfolgt (bzw. die Ziele der anderen). Das hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen. Harrison Ford hat viel Raum bekommen, was auch prima ist, Ben Kingsley war eher eine Zierde, aber eine wichtige. Ich habe nicht erwartet, dass der Film so ein Ende haben wird. Seine Idee – und somit die Idee des ganzen Films – ist lobenswert. Schade, dass die Musik fade und einfallslos ist und dass es im Film einige unlogische Dinge gibt – warum ist z. B. keiner der Erwachsenen auf die Abschlussstrategie gekommen (vielleicht wird es im Buch erklärt). Ender's Game hat mir zwar recht gut gefallen, den zweiten Teil muss ich aber nicht unbedingt sehen. Wie wir nämlich Hollywood kennen, müsste er nicht mehr so sympathisch bescheiden sei. Dreieinhalb. (13.09.2015)

I haven't seen a good, classic sci-fi that I enjoyed for quite a long time. I enjoyed this one, but the whole time I kept thinking how great it must be in the book. Even the ending wouldn't sound so terrible there. However, they decided to make a movie that is strong, emotional, has interesting characters and powerful moments, but also weaknesses, where especially the zero gravity training sort of sounds muffled and the audience doesn't really understand what it's all about. Despite a quite high budget, the film feels maybe too intimate. But something is always happening. (17.03.2014)
