1991 was an important year in the history of South Africa. That year Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the government gradually abolished apartheid. However, after a period of euphoria and liberation the atmosphere became tense again. This situation reached a climax at the time of the first general elections in April 1994. Three filmmakers from the Direct Cinema Workshop picked five locations to make a report of the final weeks before the elections. By filming in the Inkatha headquarters in former Bophutatswana, and in the countryside where the majority was made up of extremist whites, they were able to give a unique impression of these historic elections.
