Der idealistische Rechtsanwalt Jim Grant (Robert Redford) genießt hohes Ansehen. Niemand ahnt, dass der alleinerziehende Vater eine dunkle Vergangenheit verbirgt: In seiner politisch bewegten Studentenzeit gehörte er dem radikalen „Weather Underground" an, der gegen den Vietnamkrieg und das Establishment kämpfte. Als bei einem Raubüberfall ein Wachmann erschossen wurde, landete die ganze Gruppe auf der Liste der meistgesuchten Verbrecher Amerikas. Grant gelang es, abzutauchen und unter falschem Namen ein neues Leben zu führen. Als sich nun, 30 Jahre später, eine einstige Mitstreiterin (Susan Sarandon) dem FBI stellt und er selbst vom ehrgeizigen Journalisten Ben Shepard (Shia Le Beouf) enttarnt wird, beginnt erneut die Jagd auf ihn. Um endlich ohne Angst leben zu können, muss Grant beweisen, dass er an dem Überfall nicht beteiligt war. Entlasten könnte ihn jedoch nur seine einstige Geliebte (Julie Christie), die ebenfalls im Untergrund lebt. Während Grant nach ihr sucht, bleibt ihm das FBI ebenso auf den Fersen wie der ehrgeizige Shepard. Der Reporter ahnt, dass noch mehr hinter der Story steckt. Bei seiner Suche nach der Wahrheit dringt er immer tiefer in die Verstrickungen der damals Beteiligten ein - und macht eine erstaunliche Entdeckung. (ARD)

Robert Redford meant well in this movie. It is a pity, however, that there is no suspense in the movie and the only thing keeping it afloat are the acting performances. There is a great lot of actors – Shia LaBeouf, Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Brendan Gleeson and my favorite Anna Kendrick. Still, I have to admit that some of the scenes were quite interesting, but they did not fit in with the otherwise mediocre thriller focused on secret agents whose length is comparable with a two-hour wait for a stamp at a random South African office.

A sort of light-weight spy classic that doesn’t really require a review. Redford’s wrinkles have drained some of his stamina, but improved his directing skills. It’s just a shame that he doesn’t make better use of the radical background to do a bit of politics, rather than just a catalyst for family problems. But it’s fine when Shia talks with Redford.

Currently, when films like "30 Minutes After Midnight" or "Argo" are being created, "Rules of Silence" are still a simpler work that won't impress as much. It wants to show us how deep different intrigues can go, how one event can influence the lives of others, but it's just too simple, too kind. If Redford had toughened up, it could have been a more interesting hunt for one man, but this way it's just a political thriller that doesn't fully meet today's needs. A journalistic obsession with the "scoop", ancient sins of the past, and a noble parental motive at the forefront of it all, which is the key and perhaps a seeming panacea. The film also operates well on the level of the clash of the generations, where LaBeouf's character can learn something "about life" from Redford's, and indeed vice versa. As a result, it's much more of a sort of slightly meditative crime drama that isn't thriller-esque and contains essentially no action scenes. Except that Robert Redford pulls it all off and has a cast of actors for whom, with one exception, I have almost boundless respect. [75%]
