Ein Feuerwehrball in einer tschechischen Kleinstadt. Das Festkomitee hat drei Programmpunkte vorbereitet: die Übergabe einer Goldenen Feuerwehr-Axt, die Wahl einer Schönheitskönigin und eine Tombola. Doch der Abend steuert auf ein Fiasko zu. Eine Kleinstadt in der Tschechoslowakei der 60er Jahre: Der Vergnügungsausschuss der örtlichen Feuerwehr bereitet einen Ball vor. Glanzvoller Höhepunkt der Veranstaltung soll die Verleihung einer Feuerwehr-Axt an den 86-jährigen Ehrenhauptmann der Truppe sein. Für die weitere Gestaltung des Abends hat sich das Komitee etwas Besonderes einfallen lassen: Neben einer opulent ausgestatteten Tombola soll eine Miss Feuerwehr nach „westlichem“ Vorbild gewählt werden. Die Gewinnerin des Schönheitswettbewerbs soll dem Ehrenhauptmann, der an einem Krebsleiden erkrankt ist, das Präsent überreichen. Währenddessen wacht Feuerwehrmann Josef mit scharfem Auge über den Tisch, auf dem sich die nummerierten Tombola-Gewinne befinden.
Trotzdem verschwinden schon zu Beginn der Veranstaltung eine Presswurst, eine Flasche Cognac, ein Kuchen und noch so einiges andere. Zu allem Überfluss muss sich unter dem großen Tisch auch noch ein Pärchen vergnügen, was Josefs Aufmerksamkeit bezüglich der Los-Gewinne beeinträchtigt. Parallel zu dem Geschehen hat sich der Vergnügungsausschuss in einen separaten Raum zurückgezogen, um die ausgewählten Damen zu begutachten. Man kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es feierlicher wäre, wenn die jungen Frauen sich im Bikini präsentierten. Ein Feueralarm unterbricht die Festlichkeiten. Inzwischen sind fast alle Gewinne vom Tisch verschwunden, und schließlich flüchten die Miss-Kandidatinnen auf die Damentoilette, um sich der Zurschaustellung zu entziehen. Der Ball droht im Chaos zu versinken. Das Festkomitee versucht zu retten, was noch zu retten ist.

A brilliant comedy that is more chilling than funny. Under the commies, every critical film was said to hold up a mirror, and that is very accurate for this film. The fire brigades protested, but it's not about them at all, this film has a much deeper message. The scene with the old man at his burning house is one of the saddest I've ever seen.

Miloš Forman applied his excellent observational talent through a reflective portrayal of the contemporary political atmosphere. The final fire brigade meeting on the topic of "those who stole are doing well" is the best evidence of that. An unrestrained satirical view of typical Czech pettiness that blindly aspires to high goals – the beauty pageant, and then skillfully combined with folk humor – the quarrel of old spouses over who will watch the tombola. At first glance, it may seem naively simple, but at its core, it is profoundly intelligent and incredibly truthful to the extent that the safe was absolutely "justified" in its time.

Ein Porträt der tschechischen (im Kern wohl internationalen) Winzigkeit auf der kleinen Leinwand eines Feuerwehrballs. Hervorragende Darbietungen, überzeugende Atmosphäre, Humor, der einen zum Lachen bringt, aber auch ein seltsames Frösteln verursacht... Der abschließende Dialog über diejenigen, die stehlen, und diejenigen, die nicht stehlen, sollte als Analogie zur Nationalhymne der Tschechischen Republik projiziert werden. Forman verwendet dieselben Mittel wie in Die Liebe einer Blondine, Ondříčeks ausgezeichnete Dokumentarfilmkamera, der Blasmusikhintergrund, die Dialoge, die wie zufällig in medias res abgeguckt erscheinen. Die Gags sind noch ausgefeilter und pointierter als im Vorgängerfilm, einige davon bringen einen zum Lachen, andere zum Schmunzeln. Wie Vladislav Vančura zu sagen pflegte: Humor ist nicht zum Lachen da, sondern um es besser zu wissen. Und nachdem man Der Feuerwehrball gesehen hat, weiß man es wirklich besser, und das ist keineswegs eine freudige Erkenntnis. Leider verliert der Film nicht an Aktualität, ganz im Gegenteil.

It's actually a sad movie about how stupid and hypocritical people are. I have to say, except for a few scenes, I wasn't amused, more like I wanted to cry when I saw it. The fact that there are non-actors, the dialogue is life-like, and the director is Milos Forman did nothing for me. If you hate people for a while after watching it, I hope you won't be surprised.

The best film by Miloš Forman that he made before leaving for overseas. At the same time, a sophisticated and uncomfortably effective sarcastic allegory on real communism in the Czech environment. Lots of venomous lines, humorous situations, and great acting, as well as clever filmmaking that helped Forman succeed in the world. Move the bed closer to the fire so that he warms up. Despite the undisputed cruelty of many scenes, I really like this film. The foreign producer was desperate at the time of selecting the girls for the beauty queen competition, but evidently didn't understand that the director was after something completely different. Overall impression: 95%.

A well deserved great cult-classic, whose humour will be relevant for a long time thanks to the perfectly cast non-actors. The scene with the selection of the beauty queen in particular is simply flawless, especially the expression of Šebánek and co. after the arrival of all the girls' "jewels". Miloš Forman had it in the bag from the beginning of his career, he knew what to expect from a film and what to do about it, and this funny and nostalgic movie is a clear proof of that.

Der Feuerwehrball hat mir von den tschechischen Filmen von Forman aus den 1960er Jahren am besten gefallen, und von Zeit zu Zeit gehe ich gerne auf einen Feuerwehrball, auf dem eine außergewöhnlich kuriose Wahl (na ja - eigentlich nur eine Auswahl von Kandidatinnen) einer Schönheitskönigin stattfindet und bei einer Tombola ein bizarrer Preis verlost wird, während im Zuschauer während der Vorführung ein Gefühl grenzenloser (aber sehr erwünschter) Unbeholfenheit zu ungeahnten Ausmaßen heranwächst. Die allgegenwärtige humorvolle Note verwandelt sich am Ende in dichte, sogar ergreifende Positionen: beim Brand der Hütte lief es mir unangenehm den Rücken hinunter. Der Film ist heute ein Kultklassiker seines Genres und hat eine ausgesprochen zeitlose Atmosphäre.

Dieser Film geht völlig an mir vorbei und bestätigt gleichzeitig meine Präferenz für Formans amerikanische Werke. Vielleicht langweilt es mich auch schon, Filme zu schauen, in denen die Tschechen als eine Nation von Rüpeln und Dieben dargestellt werden, selbst wenn es tausendmal die Wahrheit wäre.

Tragicomic film, where personally I feel more emphasis on the tragedy because even though the movie is quite relaxed, I can't help but see how people behave and how these caricatures in Forman's film are real. Hypocrisy, greed, disrespect, and mediocrity, all hidden under the fact that you have some, basically any title.
