In einer nicht allzu fernen Zukunft: Aus dem zerstörten Nordamerika ist der Staat Panem entstanden, das Kapitol regiert das ums Überleben kämpfende Volk mit eiserner Hand. Um seine Macht zu demonstrieren, veranstaltet das Regime jedes Jahr die grausamen „Hungerspiele": 24 Jugendliche, je ein Mädchen und ein Junge aus Panems zwölf Distrikten, müssen in einem modernen Gladiatorenkampf antreten, den nur einer von ihnen überleben darf. Als ihre kleine Schwester Prim für die Spiele ausgelost wird, nimmt die 16-jährige Katniss freiwillig ihren Platz ein. Der zweite Kandidat aus Katniss' Distrikt ist Peeta, den sie seit ihrer Kindheit kennt. Kurz bevor das perfide Turnier beginnt, gesteht Peeta Katniss seine Liebe.
